Facebook Messenger app is set to stop working on a number of older smartphones. The social networking site has already started sending out notification emails to those still using the app on devices set to be hit by the change.
While owners of recent iPhone and Android models need not panic, the popular messaging app will be ending support for 3 apps across Microsoft’s platforms, which include the Facebook for Windows Phone, Messenger for Windows Phone 8 and 8.1 and Facebook for Windows 8 and 8.1 PCs
Affected users will receive an e-mail and in-app messages notifying them that they will need to upgrade OS or device to continue using Facebook and Messenger, as the current apps will stop working. By the end of March, the company will have completely ended support on the affected devices.
Messenger follows WhatsApp while Microsoft ended Skype support for older Windows Phone devices earlier this month. The operating system is quickly using popularity and currently has just 0.3% market share. People using an iPhone or a recent version of Android will not be affected.
